May 2025 Courses

ART219 Collage

Dr. Jeffery Morton
May 12th to May 30th, 2025 in New York City

An intense three-week studio and lecture course designed to explore contemporary practices and past traditions of art making in New York City. The objective of this course is to give students a greater appreciation for the vast array of art experiences and art expression, while they  develop meaningful and personal works of art. The textures of the city, its cultural institutions, and its community will also add meaning to our study of art. Students will attend about 12 excursions to museums and galleries across NYC.

Three units.  Pre-requisites:  ART 201, 202, 210, or permission from instructor.  This course fulfills one of the three required Studio Concentration Courses or Adv. Studio Concentration Courses for Art Majors, and it fulfills the Studio Elective requirement for the Art Minor. For non-Art majors, it fulfills the Fine Arts Distribution requirement.

An introductory course that surveys the music of music cultures distributed around the world: Sub-Saharan Africa, Asian, Latin American/Caribbean, India/Northern Africa, Australian/New Zealand, Early American/Blues/Appalachian. Broader themes of cultural identities and resulting values as expressed in the music of the world will be explored. Knowledge of Western music history and theory may enrich individual projects, but it is not a prerequisite for this course. Students will travel around New Zealand, visiting various music sites and interacting with Maori musical culture. Fulfills the Fine Arts or Diversity distribution.
