My Application Story
Two years ago, during my final stretch of high school, I was dead set on attending the only college I had visited. I felt completely decided until someone told me that I needed to apply to at least a couple of colleges to feel confident in my final decision. Reluctantly, I went ahead and filled out applications for a few more colleges—one of them Covenant College.
How I heard about Covenant
I had heard about Covenant through my youth pastor and a few family friends, but I really didn't know much about it until I began the application process. I was immediately connected with an admissions counselor (AC) and even began texting her about different steps throughout the process, which made all the difference. Apart from being told I should apply to multiple colleges, I was also told you can’t really know a college until you visit, so my dad and I drove more than eight hours away to see Covenant. As I sat in my hotel room the night before going to campus, I felt pretty sure I did not want to move this far away.
My first visit
It was with this mindset that I toured Covenant the next day. I sat in on a Shakespeare class and met with English professors and the track and field coach—all personalized details I had planned through conversations with my AC weeks before. Talking with the English department and professors, such as Dr. Tate, not only took me by surprise with their attention to my academic interests but also convinced me to declare English as my major.
Finding a new home
It was after I visited a girl’s dorm room during my tour and was being introduced to her friends that I realized I had never met so many students and professors who were so excited to share their home with me. I found myself wanting to be a part of this community I had found. By the time my day on campus was over, my attitude about being far away from home had completely changed and my nerves from the night before were gone because I had found a place I could imagine myself calling home.
Not everyone’s experience is the same, but for every student, there is pressure when it comes to applying for college. For me, I found out that beginning the process, communicating regularly with my AC, and visiting were so helpful in making a decision that I knew would impact the next four years of my life. I am so thankful for the opportunities Covenant offers me and the people I have built relationships with, which all started with the encouragement to complete just one more application.
